About

Well preserved distinctive Louis XV beechwood armchair by Parisian eboniste Rene Cresson, circa 1740. The frame, adorned with a crest rail, scrolling arms, and cabriole legs with carved foliate ornament, is made of carved beechwood with a caned back and seat, the later matching cushion is included. Stamped CRESSON L’AINE three times. Preserved in great antique condition, with minimal patina on the surface. A minor imperfection on the back part cane.

Rene Cresson (c.1705–1749) was a Parisian menuisier, received as maitre in 1738. He belonged to a family of cabinetmakers active in Paris, including his father Jean Cresson and his brothers Louis and Michel Cresson. His workshop produced carved seat furniture in the Louis XV style, characterised by curved forms and sculptural ornament.

Furniture stamped Cresson l’Aine is relatively rare. The Paris guild required systematic stamping of furniture only from 1743, shortly before his death, which explains the limited number of surviving stamped pieces. Works attributed to Cresson are held in museum and private collections.
