About

An etching and drypoint by Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), depicting traditional riverside buildings in Srinagar, Kashmir, with figures and boats along the water. The composition focuses on the dense architectural facades rising directly from the riverbank.

Signed in pencil "Mortimer Menpes imp" in the lower margin. Newly framed under museum glass.

Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938) was an Australian-born British painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Born in Port Adelaide, he moved to England in 1875 and studied in London, where he became closely associated with James McNeill Whistler, whose influence can be seen in Menpes's handling of tone, composition, and printmaking.

Menpes travelled extensively through Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Americas, including Japan, India, Burma, Morocco, Egypt, Mexico, and Italy. These journeys became a major source for his paintings, drawings, etchings, and drypoints, many of which focus on architecture, street life, local customs, and everyday figures. He produced more than 700 etchings and drypoints over the course of his career and became particularly known for atmospheric travel subjects.
