A 19th-century jewellery box of rectangular form with tapered corners, veneered in ivory and decorated throughout with finely engraved foliate and geometric ornament. The hinged lid is inset with a painted glass panel depicting a lively village kermesse* scene with numerous figures, buildings, trees, and rural details. The interior is finished in black, with the original hinged construction and metal fittings retained.
*Kermesse is a village fair or communal festival, especially associated with the Low Countries. In art, a kermesse scene usually depicts a crowded village celebration with dancing, drinking, music, and other festivities; it became a particularly popular subject in Dutch and Flemish painting.
