About

A group of seven* Tuareg, or Kel Tamasheq, Bata containers, probably from Agadez, Niger, dating to the 20th century. Each container is formed from molded rawhide with a fitted lower section, the surfaces decorated with incised geometric patterns of concentric lines, chevrons, and triangular motifs.

Traditionally used as portable storage containers, Bata vessels form part of Tuareg leatherwork traditions associated with nomadic life in the central Sahara.
