About

Oil on canvas landscape painting, a work from a late period of Christian Hugues Caillard (1899- 1985), depicting a grey house – a distinctive motif of the artist's body of work during his stay in the Brittany region. The scene is likely takes place in Ouessant Island. Signed and dated lower right: "Caillard (19)72"

Christian Hugues Caillard (1899, Clinchy – 1985, Paris) was a French painter and the nephew of writer Henri Barbusse, who encouraged his early artistic pursuits. He studied under the painter Maurice Loutreuil before developing an independent style. From the late 1920s he traveled widely, working across North Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, experiences that informed much of his painting. In 1935 he established his studio on Rue Clauzel in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, where he remained for the rest of his life. Alongside these travels, he worked regularly in Brittany, particularly on the island of Ouessant, painting coastal landscapes, villages, and local life.
